First 5 San Luis Obispo County (aka Children & Families Commission) is a local champion for early childhood. A public agency created in 1998 by CA Proposition 10, First 5 SLO County allocates state tobacco tax revenues and advocates for programs that support families and children prenatal to 5, so that every child is healthy, ready to learn and develop his/her potential. Approximately $1.5 million each year fund a variety of services, ranging from preschools to vision and oral health screenings to breastfeeding support, special needs resources, prenatal parent education and much more. First 5 knows that a child’s development depends largely on support that parents, family and community can give during those critical early years.
